My students currently work in small groups on various activities and hands-on manipulatives, but we do not have technology available in my classroom for students to practice their math skills on a daily basis. We are only able to go to the school computer lab once every 2 weeks, which is not an adequate enough time to improve skills. Technology will provide my students with the opportunity to improve their math skills on a daily basis.
My classroom small group time is set up where the students rotate through activities pertaining to the day's lesson. 5th grade math standards require students to have prior knowledge in basic math skills (addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division). Many students still struggle with these basic math skills. Having tablets in small group time would enable students to practice these math skills, thus improving their mathematical knowledge and grades.
