These magazines are terrific because they are written at a 3-5th grade level. Since most of my 7-11th grade students are reading at this level, it is easy for the students to read the interesting articles. The magazine provides all kinds of information and genres of text like plays, infographics, editorials, fiction stories, and real world stories that are interesting. The graphics are eye catching and students are learning and thinking about the world while reading. Included with the subscription is the online version which students can access with their i-pads. Students can listen to the story being read while following along which increases their fluency. Each article also includes 3-5 new vocabulary words so students are also increasing their vocabulary usage. My students really enjoy reading this magazine even though weeks earlier they said they hated to read.
I think this magazine is so valuable because it gets students excited to read by increasing their reading confidence. It's not the only material I use in my classroom, but it's the one resource I do use that gets students actively reading. I also take advantage of the skills included with the articles to teach my students writing about reading, compare and contrasting, identifying the who, what, when, where, why and how of an article, and persuasive writing.
