My students need coloring books and markers. Many of the students with whom I work have very stressful and chaotic lives outside of school, which carries over into their lives there. My project will provide my students with an age-appropriate, deceptively simple activity that is fun, enhances eye-hand coordination, and most importantly: calming!
My students regularly lose themselves in coloring and, in doing so, relax and open themselves up to the ability to talk about what is bothering them and contributing to overwhelming emotions and negative behaviors. As a result, they can let go of stress and find positive ways to cope, resulting in increased learning in the classroom.
