Flexible seating is a new movement in education. With flexible seating, studnets have a choice at times throughout the day where they may sit. Different types of seating appeal to different students. By having options, students can choose which seat is best for them. Once seated in a seat of their choice, students are able to better focus on the task at hand.
Flexible seating has been shown to increase focus, creativity and improve student behavior. A couch for our class library and balance ball seats for our writing center will help students focus and do their best work. Students who feel most comfortable on a couch to read will have that choice in the classroom library. They will be able to focus during independent reading time. Students who have a lot of energy and have trouble sitting still may choose to sit on the balance ball chair during writing or math centers in order to help them focus and complete their work.
