Our new reading curriculum is all encompassing. It includes reading, comprehension, grammar, phonics, writing, spelling, and vocabulary. Each week, my students are introduced to new stories, vocabulary words, phonics skills, grammar skills and much more. My students struggle to grasp these sometimes difficult skills in just one week, with just the workbooks that the curriculum provides. I want to introduce and practice some of these skills with my students in small groups during a portion of our reading group session.
I think that by practicing these skills in our small groups, where it is safe to make mistakes, my students will be able to grasp these concepts in a quick and engaging way. I also think that learning through games will help my lower readers fears tremendously.
