I have been thinking about implementing flexible seating in my classroom for some time now, and, when bringing it up to family and friends, the question I usually get is 鈥渨hat exactly is flexible seating?鈥 Put simply, flexible seating is a classroom set up where students have the chance to choose where they sit, from a variety of options. In a classroom with flexible seating, it wouldn鈥檛 be odd to find a group of students collaborating at a table with stools surrounding it, while another group is balancing on stability balls, and yet others are positioned at standing desks. In a typical flexible seating arrangement, students can have quite a few options to choose from!
The next question would be "why?" Why have we decided to do this? Quite simply, we feel that this arrangement is better for our students. Flexible seating gives students the power of choice- where to sit, and when. It also provides students the ability to move. They can move around the classroom, choosing where to sit, and they can also move within their seating arrangement. When utilizing a flexible seating arrangement, students have the ability to balance, bounce, kneel, stand, and sit, as well as a variety of other movements. Movement is so beneficial for student focus and attention. In a flexible seating classroom, students can collaborate with ease, as most of the seats are grouped together. Students can choose where their group or partnership works best. It is also great for whole class discussions, as students can choose where they feel they will focus on the lesson best.
In short, I feel that working a flexible seating arrangement into my classroom would be extremely beneficial for my students, and I hope you will consider donating to my project.
Thank you!!
