My students need Power 54W 4 Feet T5 Grow Light System with Stand Rack for Plant Growing, VIVOSUN Grow Lamps, Burpee 72 Cell Self Watering Seed Starting Kit, and CanDo Inflatable Donut Balls for flexible seating options to read and watch their seedlings grow! Obesity, diabetes, and heart disease are at record highs nationwide. So many adults do not have a solid background in nutrition and do not make healthy choices in the foods they eat. I am hoping to change that by starting early: in the first grade. I will choose some local, fast-growing vegetable options and allow students to choose 2-3 options to plant. We will plant the seeds using the plant starter trays and set them up in the classroom under the adjustable grow light. Since I only have one window and it does not let in much sun, the grow light is necessary! We will use the yellow flexible seating "donuts" to observe and write about the seedlings as they grow and develop.
By learning about how plants grow, what their needs are, and how simple it is to take care of them, I am hoping to plant "seeds" in their lives that will inspire them to understand and appreciate the food that farmers provide for us and possibly grow their own food someday! We will plant seeds, watch them grow, and plant them in our school raised beds for everyone to enjoy. Hopefully we will have some delicious home grown vegetables for them to taste by the end of the year!
