Many students like to make paper airplanes. They all have the curiosity of making their own toys. I found this lesson on PBSkids.org teaching kids how to make a toy boat. The interesting part is the lesson only give some concepts of what kind of materials are good for building a boat in the water. It does require a motor and battery to make the boat to move in the water.
My students are eagle to learn, curious about how things work. They will definitely benefited from the support you are going to give them. 50% of my students are qualified for free breakfast and lunch. They haven't been exposed to lots of STEAM projects like this.
Art class is a great place for this project because it offers a no right and wrong environment to try new things. Students will be learning more from a not so intimidating learning environment when most of them coming from a family that have not giving them much technology and science stimulations at home.
Furthermore, they are learning art is not only limited to only painting, drawing, and sculpturing. They are many contemporary artists are working on all different kind of materials and medium.
