About 30% of our incoming 5th-grade middle school KIPPsters enter below grade level in literacy skills. Furthermore, due to budget restraints, we are unable to have a school-wide library that services the educational needs of our students. However, if there is a challenge we find a way as a community to solve and overcome that challenge. My current KIPPsters felt that the incoming 5th-grade KIPPsters for the 2018-2019 school year deserve a classroom that was reflective of our community.
With the guidance and love of my current KIPPsters, they helped select the books for this project and even designed a space in our classroom that would be a comfortable reading pad for their fellow peers. Each book covers different interest, reading levels, and genres to allow for students to feel comfortable with reading independently and in turn, help them grow into confident readers and hopefully creative storytellers as well; all because they had the gift of reading a book of their choice.
