My economic students will learn about economic principles by designing and building bridges from balsa wood and wire. From start to finish, students will work in collaborative groups and create a bridge design, manage inventories, calculate taxes and payroll, and ultimately build a mock bridge. Just like in real-life, students will be given various challenges to deal with, such as high prices of materials, weather conditions, and labor shortages.
Students will also present periodic reviews to a fictional city council as a way to monitor progress of this project. In the end, students will test their bridges to see which bridge can support the most weight.
