When you sit down and get lost in a book, are you sitting in a rigid hard desk or are you curled up in a comfortable cushy chair? In order to ignite the desire to read, my students need to be able to authentically enjoy the adventure.
By providing flexible seating, my students will feel more in control of their learning. The classroom will transform to a space where they are able to get comfortable and engage in the full learning experience.
Flexible seating will promote a greater sense of community and collaboration. When students are comfortable, they are more like to take risks while participating which will yield a more engaging experience.
I am asking for bean bag chairs and floor pillows to start my flexible seating transformation. I will be buying fluffy throw rugs, lap desks, clipboards, and other items to help make work stations with the new seating. Since most of my students already have an aversion to reading and writing, creating an enticing environment will ease some of their anxieties and encourage them to work through their dread. When students are comfortable, it is proven that they are more eager to take ownership of their education.
