My students have limited knowledge and experience with the skills needed to truly be successful in our high-tech society in which we live. Being in a rural and low-income community, many students do not understand the value of having working knowledge of coding or the power of collaborative teamwork through problem-solving with STEM initiatives. They do not grasp how applicable coding is in their everyday lives or in the careers offered around their community (steel production, shipping/transportation industry, agriculture, energy production, etc). It is my goal to use Ozobots, as a starting tool to instill these values and begin to build a working knowledge of how computer science and problem-solving is used outside of the classroom in the lives of my students.
I would like to use Ozobots to introduce students to the demanding and ever-expanding world of code and computer science so that they will gain more interest in and understand the value of future STEM-related opportunities offered in their lives. As an educator, it is my job to prepare students for what the future not only offers them, but in fact expects of them, and I believe that Ozobots will help me to accomplish the task of connecting everyday learning with the power of STEM initiatives.
