The students who I teach this year enjoy "free art time" more than anything! I can easily convince them to tackle difficult academic tasks if they know that they are earning time to make art projects at the end of the day. Nothing makes them happier than getting a blank piece of white paper, their choice of one piece of colored construction paper, and 20 minutes of uninterrupted time.
My budding artists do not have the basic items needed to create art at home ~ having their own "Art Boxes" will allow them to take ownership of their supplies and will ensure that their work extends beyond the walls of our school. Each box, filled with crayons, glue, colored pencils, scissors, and a tablet of multicolored construction paper will allow their minds to soar! I have to purchase so many of the basics for school that there isn't much left in my personal budget to buy more art supplies. Although they are able to share supplies, having their own boxes will be much appreciated.
The one thing that several students mentioned today, when asked what they missed most about being out of school for the holiday break, was "doing art". Thank you in advance for helping, in any way, to provide them with the necessary tools to expand their minds (and hearts) through art!
