This project teaches students to create from re-purposing items they would normally see no use for. Items which are, in their minds, junk and outdated technology in the form of CDs and DVDs will be transformed with the fabric paint and markers I am requesting into mandalas and ornaments. This will be a mixed-media project where students learn about using the sketchbook as a planning tool, symmetry, color theory, stained glass as an art media (via Louis Comfort Tiffany c. 1900), and mandalas.
Many of my students will not have the opportunity to take additional art classes, or they are intimidated by the idea of art. My lessons offer them insight into how they can create at home and the steps to becoming more confident in their own artwork. Through this project, they will learn pattern, art process and planning. Neatness and planning in their processes will help teach craftsmanship. The project will be displayed in the school building as a whole with all students being represented.
These supplies will significantly change the outcomes of our projects. Right now we only have a few supplies to create with. We save everything and take donations, like CDs, in order to utilize as many supplies as possible.
