My English 1 students will be using these Chromebooks to build skills in a variety of different Common Core English Writing goals. These include informational writing, narrative/creative writing and argumentative writing. More specifically, students will be working on research projects which range from career readiness to researching the impact of a poet on society. Students get the opportunity to write argumentatively over critical issues to prepare them for debate-style skills needed in both legal and political careers. Students also get the opportunity to express themselves creatively by writing their own poetry, short stories and memoirs. The skills we focus on suit all learning styles and desires.
I always have my focus our tasks on skills my students will need in future, real-life settings. Many of these students will not get this experience if I do not provide them with technology in the classroom. Again, I serve in a district where most students come from families low-income backgrounds. Some of my students are also English Language Learners (ELLs) or receive special education services. Providing my students with Chromebooks also allows me the opportunity to use ELA programs like Snap and Read to better aid remedial reading learning and language acquisition.
