Students will be empowered to look beyond the surface level of scientific research and critically think, discuss and analyze the cost of discovery.
Students will learn about HeLa cells, an "immortal" cell line that has paved the way for a variety of medical therapies and disease research, and they will learn about Henrietta Lacks, the African American woman who unknowingly "donated" her cells to science.
Reading Rebecca Skloot's "The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks" will allow students to experience the social impacts of scientific research with a deeper level of scientific thought. They will weigh pros and cons and see what happens first hand when science, ethics, and humanity collide.
