Children need to move when learning. Our teachers incorporate brain and motor breaks into our student-centered learning, but many children need a more multi-sensory approach. Children need flexible seating arrangements--standing desks, rockers, large pillows, stools, and bucket chairs. They actually need to wiggle while they work.
New research shows that flexible seating can help children stay engaged. Studies consistently showed that classroom design matters to how children engage, participate, and ultimately stay involved in their learning experience (Fernandes, Huang & Rinaldo, 2011; Gremmen, Van den Berg, Segers & Cillessen, 2016 and Marx, Fuhrer & Hartig, 1999). Wobble chairs, stools, and cushions allow them to move as needed while they read, write, investigate math and science concepts, and complete tasks.
We want to incorporate a variety of flexible seating throughout each of our classrooms to allow students to choose what works best for their own bodies. We envision a day when children don't want to leave, with all of their instructional, social, emotional, and kinesthetic needs met. Please help us nurture all of our learners.
