Students need technology such as calculators to be successful. Pencil and paper can only go so far. Students learn complex math materials in class. While in school they have access to the tools they need, such as calculators. When they go home and practice their materials they do not have these helpful tools.
Calculators allow students to have access to more complex mathematical concepts through exploration and experimentation. Using calculators at home allows students to go beyond pencil and paper and allows students who lack basic skills a way to be successful. Many of my students have IEP's and did not or cannot memorize basic math facts. Calculators help to ease this frustration and allows them to complete grade level work.
