The Eielson Coding Group, which is sponsored by the library, is developing a Samsung Solve For Tomorrow challenge to help Alaskans report tick sightings to the state veterinarian. Alaska Department of Fish and Game reports increased tick sightings and reports in previously unaffected areas of Alaska and requests that citizens send a sample to the state veterinarian in Fairbanks. However, many people do not know about this initiative and those who do know sometimes lack the equipment to collect and send tick samples.
Our project aims to connect existing tick map data and tick information with users in an app. We will use the gloves to collect samples and work with existing samples and we will use the microscope to photograph ticks for use on the app so that users can compare their tick in the field to an enlarged sample photograph of actual ticks found in Alaska.
