All of these materials will help our students learn to handle some of their emotions and conflicts better so they will be successful in the classroom learning environment. We need puppets, sensory dough, stress balls and a collection of therapeutic games.
Due to the trauma that so many of our students have experienced, they have a hard time sitting still, focusing, and being fully present in the classroom. For some of these students, having the opportunity to meet with a therapist and work through their challenges makes a huge difference! All of the therapeutic games will help our students work through anger, grief, trauma, and other issues affecting their ability to learn.
We also have started to develop peace corners in every classroom in our school. This gives students the ability to take a break in the classroom when triggered and then to return back to learning in a short period of time. Even though we did our best with the funds we had for this year to stock the peace corners, more resources for our students would make the peace corners more effective.
We are hoping to ultimately create a trauma informed environment where all of our students feel safe, heard, and have a place to come every day where they can learn and grow.
