The first book that our fifth graders read at Tilden Middle School in the School District of Philadelphia is Night of the Spadefoot Toad, by Bill Harley. We are in need of more books because our books are quite old and some of the pages are missing. It's an awesome book to read when starting the school year off.
While reading this book, we talk a lot about comparing characters and how they handle challenges and interactions with each other. In the story the main character Ben, moves across country from Arizona to Massachusetts. He is having a hard time making friends, finding his place at his new school and is missing his box from Arizona. Our students go through similar circumstances because they are at times transient and/or come from other countries.
