This is a project I have been thinking about all school year. I hear over and over from kids that they don't like to read. I want to be the catalyst that changes that! I would like to have a variety of seating options for them to choose from during my reading class. Students can take advantage of an arrangement of flexible seating options like big overstuffed pillows, soft seats, wobbly seat cushions, and flex-space floor seats. When students are comfortable and get to independently make choices they feel empowered and their learning becomes visible. These seating options will also allow me to start having a 30 minute D.E.A.R (Drop Everything And Read) time once a month with my resource students. For my primary students (1st and 2nd graders), I will facilitate read-alouds that foster critical thinking skills, vocabulary development, and collaborative conversations. For my intermediate students (3rd-5th graders), I want to have them bring anything they like to read in. Along with the fun and innovative seating choices, I will also have engaging, multiple genre books for them to borrow. (More high-interest books may be my next project!)
If I can light a spark that turns into a roaring flame then I have done my job. Reading is essential for all other subjects in school, using comfortable and innovative seating areas will help to foster this. I want my students to "cozy up" with a good book and get lost in a wonderful adventure of words!
