My school's library is limited, so my students don't have access to as many books as I wish they did. As a reader, I encourage a strong reading culture in my classroom. I just finished reading The Hate U Give and LOVED it! The book is told through the perspective of a high school girl, which will make it relatable to my 11th graders.
I want to be able to expose my students to more contemporary novels, so that I can create lifelong readers.
I am planning to pair The Hate U Give with A Raisin in the Sun and do a semester-long unit on black female authors and discuss the evolution of racism in America, with a focus on what has and hasn't changed since A Raisin in the Sun.
