In the alternative school setting, we focus on building relationships and social, emotional and behavioral skills before academics. Students are placed in our building, per their IEP, due to severe or dangerous behaviors. These behaviors are a result of a mental disability and/or trauma. Many students come from low-income homes and come to school to have their basic needs met. My students require an extremely high-structured environment to be most successful.
