Mark Haddon's book, The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-time, offers a fun, contemporary read while also providing enough "meat" for interesting classroom discussions and thoughtful essays. The pre-IB Ninth Grade Literature and Composition course is designed to ready students for the International Baccalaureate Diploma Program. Typically students read British Literature in our state as seniors in high school, but our students tackle Shakespeare, Chaucer, and the others in the British literary canon much earlier. This novel offers a worthwhile divergence from long-established titles. In addition to being a break from the traditional, I also love that the narrator of the story has Asperger's and allows students to see (and relate) to a character who is likely different from them.
