To foster creativity and imagination in my students, I give them many opportunities to solve a problem through building a solution. In this engineering task, students are challenged to grow food (cilantro) without soil and with limited water.
They enjoy designing, measuring, coloring, cutting, gluing, and testing their ideas. These engineering activities I give to the students tie together the Reading, Math, Science, and Social Studies skills they learn.
Hydroponically growing food is their upcoming challenge. Using the materials, such as the plastic tubing, rubber bands, and fertilizer, students will attempt to grow their own plants in hydroponic systems of their own design. I call it Farmineering: Where farming meets engineering.
