These materials will help my students read in a comfortable and welcoming environment. Meeting together in a "meeting area" is a research based approach coming from Columbia Teachers College.
I find that when we gather together for instruction and
conversation, we foster a sense of community that inspires students to give their very best each day. The flexible seating options will help students to keep their bodies active through balance, which helps them to stay focused.
One important part of my educational approach is instilling real-world ideas and practices into the reading lives of my students. They are allowed to re-read books they love, and abandon books they don't love. They can fall in love with one genre and read as many books as they want to from it. Similarly, I want them to know that reading is something that happens in community, and that isn't going to happen in our cold and orderly rows of middle school desks.
