The majority of my students are from military families. Their unique background knowledge provides the classroom with a diverse feel. They have needs that are unlike those of traditional learners. Their backgrounds are different, as they travel across the nation and world prior to walking in my classroom. Their at-home lives are often challenging. With a parent(s) deployed, my students often have concerns and situations many young children do not have to face. The classroom provides a safe and consistent feel. As a public school serving numerous military families in Colorado, I serve not only as an educator, but a supporter, loving confidant, and consistent adult in their lives. As a fourth grade teacher, this is the year of difference. They are reading, writing, completing math in a manner that is different from their previous experiences.
