A flexible seating classroom is one in which traditional seating charts are replaced with seating arrangements that allow the students to sit where they choose. One of its principal objectives is to reduce the periods of time in which students are sedentary.
As I have begun implementing a flexible seating reading environment, I've noticed a shift in reluctant readers wanting to cozy up to a good book. Having flexible seating, such as bean bags, balance balls and stools, allows choice and gives them the best learning environment for diverse learners. Traditional desks can make students territorial or possessive over their space and supplies. Flexible seating encourages children to share space and supplies. Flexible seating allows students to find comfortable positions throughout the classroom. Comfortable students are calm, focused, and productive.
Along with the flexible seating, as a reading teacher, I know that students learn in diverse ways, so traditional assessment methods are not the only way I assess my students. We do a variety of projects including posters, Google Slides presentations, 3-D models and such. The printer will allow students to print materials in color for their posters and projects. The arts materials will help them to create projects to display their knowledge of subject area in a creative way versus just the paper-pencil tests that are traditionally the measure of their success.
