The sensory tools chosen will help students meet individual sensory needs. The students in my classroom have incredible strengths and abilities but often need help refocusing or dealing with frustrations throughout the day. Providing sensory items allows students to work on social skills and academics while decreasing frustration and limiting overstimulation.
Items such as the weighted blanket, vest or lap pad allow students to feel secure in order to focus on their given task. Tools such as fidget or stretch items allow other students to utilize self-calming techniques when needed.
When students feel confident and safe in their learning environment, their progress towards individual goals increases dramatically. My classroom and these sensory items help to provide this safe and supportive environment to meet each of my students' varying needs. Students will utilize a variety of items to learn what best meets their individual needs so they are prepared to advocate for themselves in their future education.
