By the end of kindergarten all of my students must learn how to read! To do this, students in my classroom need opportunities to read, write, engage, and collaborate with others to develop their reading skills and comprehend text. To support this, a literacy center and designated area for reading is needed. I currently have CD's and cassette tapes with books, but no CD/cassette player, nor headphones for students to follow along with. During our literacy rotations, students will receive the opportunity to sit with their group, put on their new headphones and listen to a story on their new classroom CD/Cassette player. Afterwards they have the opportunity to listen and read the story again to gain confidence, talk with their group about what they read, and write about it. The listening center helps students learn to read, comprehend text, and enjoy reading! The comfy couch listening center creates a cozy spot for this to happen in my classroom as I have no table/seating area for it. Students will feel special when it is their time to listen to and read stories on the cozy couch, helping them get excited about and fall in LOVE with reading!!
