My students struggle with concepts such as empathy and compassion. However they excel in discussion settings and have learned so much when content is presented this way.
Doing a group novel read where they can each have their own copy to hold and work through the words keeps learning casual and fun. I have found that when they feel they are in it together, my students are more willing to try a more challenging book. Each student having a copy of Wonder also allows me to not only work on their reading skills in a low stress way I can simultaneously teach Socratically and inquisitively on the topics of empathy; improving their social skills.
