Most of my students come from a low literacy background with little appreciation for reading. They associate all reading with "readicide" and avoid it at all costs. I want to expose them to works that show them books are not the enemy while having them experience stories that are important for them to know.
Elie Wiesel's story is one that not only inspires while it teaches. To be a well-educated person, you need to know what happened in history so that it can never happen again. Reading about it in a textbook is one thing. Experiencing it through the eyes of a survivor is something else. These kids will benefit from both increased reading skills and learning history that should never be repeated.
