My students need a set of books and book buddies to help them become more involved readers. My students love books about Pete the Cat, Clifford, and Splat the Cat as well as a variety of other genres and characters. My students would love being able to act out their different stories, and read to their book buddies.
It is often said that students learn the most by doing. We try our best to be a STEM school, but when my students come to media, we also have to reinforce the love of a good book.
When my students are reading to their buddies, they are able to practice sounding out the words, and they will be able to hear if they are sounding out the word correctly, without the fear of others judging them. So often does the morale of a reader get discouraged because another student tells them that the way their reading is "not the right way." When reading with a book buddy, they are able to talk to the buddy and think "does the way I'm reading this make sense."
