With the adoption of a new curriculum, my students have the opportunity to read novels that are relevant to their experiences. Many dislike reading because the stories they have worked through before do not reflect their concerns. "Monster" is about a 16-year-old boy who is incarcerated, and unfortunately, this is a reality for some of my students. My 8th graders will be interested in this text and I hope it encourages them to read more. "The Skin I'm In" by Sharon Flake, is about a 7th grade girl who is struggling with her identity because of her skin color and eventually learns to love herself. In a school that is almost entirely comprised of students of color, this is something my 7th graders live with and I hope it inspires them to feel comfortable in their skins.
