My classes are 9-12 grade Special Education students, which range from emotional/behavioral, to being on the autism spectrum. These are Performing Arts and Learning Strategies electives necessary for these students to graduate high school with a standard diploma. Our students come from a variety of living situations such as group homes, single and traditional parent homes. Last year we began this performing arts class, which has become very popular with the students.
At times, it is difficult for me to tell the difference between the students and the teacher, because I learn just as much from them. It is not only entertaining for the students, it is also teaching them to become the entertainers. For many, this may be the first time these students have had an opportunity to participate in a performing arts class. When a student accomplishes a skill, and their eyes go wide with joy, my smile is as big as theirs.
