My students need good books that will make them want to read. Most of my students own fewer than ten books in their homes; they do not see reading as a pleasure but rather as a chore, or at worst, something that they are "bad at". By building a classroom library full of amazing literature, we can build community and share a love for reading and learning with each other. Our school library has wonderful books, but they are often checked out and have really long waiting lists. It is hard to get my hands on popular literature that young adults are interested in. I want to provide them with books that are "ours" and reach them on their level.
If I can share with them how wonderful reading can be, maybe I can give them hope that reading doesn't have to be a bad experience. I know that if they read more, they will feel more confident in school, and hopefully more confident in the world outside school too.
