In order to have more relevant and engaging conversations in class, students need more diverse and current texts to read. I am looking forward to teaching a unit about Choosing Silence, where I will engage students in texts surrounding current racial and social trends that affect voice, silence, and power in society. However, I do not currently have access to the books that will spark these conversations that I foresee being truly meaningful to my students. These books include The Hate U Give by Angie Thomas, Dear Martin by Nic Stone, and All American Boys by Brendan Kiely and Jason Reynolds. Through Literature Circles, or small group book clubs, students will explore characters and events of these books in deeper and more significant ways.
My goal is to have students begin to see themselves reflected in the literature that they read in schools. With small groups reading these books with strong messages about voice, power, and silence, I believe that my students will gain life lessons and insights into our current world. I hope that by employing Literature Circles via current and relevant books, students will be more engaged with reading and school.
