Students need voice and choice in their reading selections.
Offering choice creates a student-centered learning environment, where individual strengths and interests are celebrated! I am striving to build a thriving reading culture in my high school. This means putting a lot of books in my students' hands. I am excited to pair contemporary works of literature representing diverse viewpoints with the traditional canon of literature typically taught in high schools around the country. This choice unit will be a series of books available to read "book club style." I have collaborated with my high school library media specialist and the teen librarian at the local public library. Together we have created this list of companion texts to complement their reading of John Steinbeck's Of Mice and Men.
