Not every child has books or games at home that they can enjoy. And once they leave school, many children have nothing to do but to go home and watch TV. Giving students a safe space to stay before and after school and providing them with activities will increase their interest in coming to school and also strengthen their social connections with other students.
In Texas, football and other athletics often come way before "nerd" interests such as Dungeons and Dragons and Chess Club. However, these children are just as important, and need just as much love, attention, and support as the high school football star. Because of a few key teachers in my life, I became a teacher and am looking to give back to my students in the same way. Do you remember how tough high school was if you were a nerd? Wouldn't it have been wonderful to have a safe space where you could congregate and just celebrate being yourself? Help a teenager achieve that dream.
The games, comic books, and D&D miniatures will all go into my classroom Library and can be checked out by any student. I have students who come ask for a chess board to use at lunch. And since we don't have a school library, anyone can come to my room for a book.
