I am assembling 2 highly capable creative AV workstations primarily for the use of students in my middle school technology classes. The basic PC configuration of the workstations are 2 Apple iMac minis configured with 6-core processors that are needed to speed processing time for music and video productions that the students will be participating in. High speed external SSD drives and a 2TB backup will be used to manage information for these projects.
The 1st workstation will be dedicated to creating news and special interest videos for intra-school broadcasts (on demand). This video production unit will also be used for any student who wishes to tackle animation or other computing intensive projects. The primary software to be used will be Final Cut Pro, a "prosumer" digital video editing tool. Apple offers this as part of an educational bundle that also includes the audio program Logic Pro that will be used primarily on the 2nd workstation.
The 2nd workstation is configured with sound equipment to provide real world live and studio recording sound experiences. Project materials for this include a 6 channel mixer that allows multiple instrument inputs for recording live performances as well as allowing for multiple students to participate in studio recordings at the same time. The analog sounds are digitized by the ProSonus unit which also converts digital audio back to analog for sound monitoring purposes. A headphone amp/splitter with wraparound headphones maximize student participation in monitoring activities. In addition to audio recordings, some or all of the sound equipment will be cross-utilized for AV projects as needed (e.g., producing a music video, video podcasts...).
The goal is to have responsive systems whereby we can get good quality results within a 50-minute work period and develop marketable AV production skills and/or lifetime hobbies for motivated students.
