Students learn by using all of their senses and exploring their environments! With a sensory room, students have the opportunity to practice their fine motor, gross motor, and sensory processing skills in a calm environment, with minimal distractions.
Sensory items, like a sensory table, sensory mats, and alphabet hopscotch, give feedback to the body that induce a calm feeling, reduce anxiety, and enhance attention and body awareness.
As adults, we learn how to self-regulate by "eating, drinking coffee, taking a walk" for example. Students are still learning how to self-regulate after sitting for long periods of time in the classroom. The tools in the room help them to "self-regulate".
