As a teacher, I am a giver. I give of myself every day, whether it is emotional support, homework help, snacks, or supplies. My school is over half free and reduced-priced lunch, meaning my students and their families don't have the means to buy the countless supplies they will need throughout their four years here.
Pencils will allow students to write their homework; index cards will help them study; candy will motivate them on days when they don't believe in themselves; the colored paper will make their projects pop.
As a special education teacher, I have an especially hard job teaching students who have already given up on themselves. They think a project is an impossible obstacle because their parents can't purchase supplies. Math homework seems insurmountable because they lack the calculator necessary to solve their equations. Tests are stress-inducing because they don't have flash cards to study.
Thank you!
