Lego Mindstorms will be used to create a robotics program at our school. We do not have any academic enrichment programs such as this. We would like to start a Lego First team. To do this, we need the Mindstorms robot set as this is the platform Lego uses for their challenges.
This will be life changing for some students. Many of them have never been on a team of any kind before. This is very structured program which helps them work together to solve real world problems. This is not only academically beneficial but also helps social emotional learning.
Because so many students live in transitional housing ( foster, group homes, homeless) this will take place during the school day. Middle school will be the initial group targeted as they are highest percentage of students at our school as well as the most overlooked traditionally. Other age groups will be able to participate. The goal will be for the middle school students to be the mentors and teachers to the other students.
