My students are always motivated to learn when there are new activities. Learning to interact in a positive manner, improving fine motor skills, and learning new concepts are all skills that my students need to learn and practice to be able to continue to participate as independently as possible in a general education classroom. Materials that are versatile and can be used to teach multiple skills are a vital part of my students' education.
The materials I have chosen will be used to teach many more skills than just the ones they were designed to teach. Social skills are challenging to learn for students with autism My students will learn social skills such as sharing, requesting a turn, waiting their turn, and working together with their peers. This will have such a positive impact on their interactions with the students in the afternoon class as well as the rest of their lives.
The fine motor skills they will learn with these materials will help my students prepare for learning to write and cut in preparation for kindergarten. Each of these materials can be used to teach counting, colors, and following directions as well. They also help the students learn to engage in tasks for longer periods of time and to complete tasks.
