One of every teacher's goal is for students to feel comfortable and relaxed in the classroom. Since my students attend a Title 1 school, the school budget for a brand new carpet is slim to none. A carpet for the classroom is designed to bring students closer together during whole group instruction to allow students to build community, brainstorm new ideas, and make observations. However, with the old carpets our school has and our large class size, students end up getting clammed together, invading each other's space and overall end up uncomfortable. With a brand new carpet that accommodates our large class size, everyone can sit together as whole and still have their own individual space! Within first grade, social emotional skills are vital in developing strong positive relationships and the time on the carpet is where most of that learning takes place. Morning meeting, restoration circle, and many other communication discussions take place on the carpet, so let's make the place where we meet the most spacious, comfy, and relaxing!
