I have never worked in a school as rich in diversity, full of students with varying needs and interests as my High School. Our counseling office is tasked with serving over 2000 high school students from as many as 50 different countries. In order to support them academically, we must also understand and support their social and emotional needs. Given our large population, small group counseling is an area within our program that we'd like to expand. We have been given a space to provide that support, but it is a totally blank space. We want our students to feel comfortable and safe, in a welcoming environment.
First and foremost, this project will help us furnish our group counseling space and grow our toolbox of activities and arsenal of supplies. The bean bag chairs and rug will provide alternative seating and a homelike space for our students. The art supplies and fidgets will be resources for our group sessions. We hope to serve at least 500 students through this project, by engaging them in short term, solution focused group counseling sessions in the space you will be funding. The goal of improving this space and obtaining additional group counseling materials is for our students to develop new coping skills and mindfulness tools. These skills and tools have the potential to improve student outcomes including attendance rates and academic performance.
