Students will be using the requested solar telescope to observe the active chromosphere of the Sun, including spicules, sunspots, and dramatic loops of plasma ejected into space known as a prominence. In order to facilitate photography of the Sun (to measure changes), we will also need a heavy duty mount to track the Sun through the sky. As a bonus, the mount will also accommodate another optical telescope that we use for early morning, evening, and night-time observation.
The primary focus of the class is to put the materials and equipment in the students' hands, to facilitate more meaningful learning. This equipment brings the second closest astronomical object right into the students' hands.
