This book club will create an opportunity for students to participate in a thoughtful discussion on several valuable themes including family, friendship, and kindness. The book examines the life of a child with special needs, and his journey to self-acceptance. Each student will be able to receive a copy of the book so they will be able to read it outside of the club meetings.
Students are able to learn about the meaning of empathy, and feel what it is like to view the world from different characters' perspectives. It models tolerance of others, and encourages acceptance. The club will culminate in a kindness project the students will choose to enhance empathy both in school, and the community.
