Nearly all students from low‑income households
Data about students' economic need comes from the National Center for Education Statistics, via our partners at MDR Education.
Many of my students struggle with their behavior and their emotions. This chill out space will give them the opportunity to learn that there are other ways to deal with their feelings other than lashing out at others or berating themselves. When students struggle academically they will become frustrated, which comes out in many different ways. This space will allow them to go and calm down by listening to calming and soothing sounds, putting on silencing headphones, using the stress reliever toys and coloring books or just going into the tee-pee for time alone. Everyone needs these things even our students. By the end of the year, the students are taking themselves to this area on their own recognizing themselves what they need. This is a major accomplishment for students in an urban environment surrounded by violence.
